It is so simple to not be dependent on commercial laundry detergents! As you can see, homemade laundry detergent doesn't look like some crazy science experiment that I'm sure many people are likely to imagine it as. What do we use in this? Well first off, I'd like to say that it is even more eco-friendly to go ahead and use those commercial bottles that you've had from before. Don't go out and buy special containers when you have them right there! Recipe for 2 (1 gallon) containers of laundry detergent:
-1/2 Bar of Fels Naptha Soap (grated)
-1/2 Cup of Borax
-1/2 Cup of Washing Soda
-2 & 1/4 Cup of Water
Melt water and grated soap together over the stove. Do not boil or you will have a soapy mess. After everything is dissolved, add the Borax and Washing Soda and stir until dissolved. Pour mixture into the two containers (as equally as possible). Let this sit overnight. The next day, you can take the end of a kitchen spoon to stir up the "goo" and then fill up the rest of the container with hot water, but leave room at the top of the container (a few inches). SHAKE IT! Usually, it is best to shake before using the mixture. Enjoy your new green laundry detergent!
